All results on Home Yardstick are estimates only. Consult a licensed contractor or electrician before you order materials, sign a contract or start work.

Why results can differ from reality

  • Calculators use simplified models and the inputs you give them. A small measuring error can change the result.
  • Real buildings have features a calculator doesn't see: valleys, dormers, rot, hidden damage, framing that isn't square, or old wiring.
  • Cost figures are ranges built from public wage and price data for the year shown on each page. Local prices, the season, access and the contractor's workload all move the final price.
  • Building codes are adopted and amended locally. Your city or county's version is the one that applies.

Electrical, gas and structural work

Electrical and gas work can cause fire, electrocution, carbon monoxide poisoning and death. Our electrical tools use physics formulas and reference the National Electrical Code (NEC) by article number, but they don't reproduce the code and don't replace it. Our HVAC load tools give a simplified estimate and are not a substitute for a full ACCA Manual J calculation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections for this work, and many require a licensed professional to do it.

Working at height

Falls from roofs and ladders cause serious injuries every year. Measure from the attic or the ground when you can, and use proper fall protection if you go on a roof.
